Opening remarks are given by Mr. Thomas J. Stosur, Director of Planning, Baltimore City. Mr. Stosur briefly covers some highlights on City redevelopment projects, private development projects, and how the proposed new zoning code will help foster more investment and help streamline the approval process.

Our event moderator is Mr. Charles Yumkas, Esq., – Offit Kurman. Our other panelists include Mr. Evan Morville, Seawall Development Co., Mr. Doug Schmidt, Chesapeake Real Estate Group, Mr. Tom Liebel, FAIA, Marks, Thomas Architects, and Mr.John Diehl, LEED AP, Southway Builders.

Baltimore’s population is growing! The expectation is that this trend will not only continue, but will increase in its’ rate of expansion. Our panel of experts examine the facts and discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the construction industry as it meets the needs of this new period of growth in Baltimore City.

A short list of topics examined include:

  • Mayor Rawlings-Blake has a goal of 10,000 new residents
  • Class B office space being repositioned into apartments
  • Rehabbing industrial and vacant buildings for new uses, memorializing Baltimore’s history
  • Seawall is transforming communities with new business models such as teacher housing and collaborative work spaces for non-profits
  • Housing stock needs to be of mixed income and support the local workforce (not just multi-million $ residents along the waterfront)
  • Redevelopment often involves complex financial transactions, urbanization will be spurred by government incentives such as tax credits and incentives.

This program is different from most MCN podcasts in that it much longer (1 hour 12 minutes) than usual.
