On January 12, 2018, the Maryland Senate voted to override Governor Hogan’s veto of the General Assembly’s paid leave bill from last year’s legislative session. The paid leave bill (formally known as the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act) is slated to become law in Maryland on February 11th requiring employers with over 14 employees to provide PAID sick and safe leave at a minimum of 1 hour per 30 hours worked and provides for potentially severe damages and penalties for non-compliance.

Failure to keep accurate records of accrued and used leave creates a rebuttable presumption of violation.

  • The law’s requirements and exceptions (including exception for employers in the construction industry that are parties to collective bargaining agreements)

Perhaps even more surprisingly, 47% did not have insurance, and of those who did, over a third didn’t know if their insurance covered damages in case of a disaster.
